Nerdin In The 90’s

Nerdin in the 90’s

A lot has changed for nerds since our beloved decade has come and gone. The term Nerd alone has changed. What use to be used for ridicule, now is used in a much less negative connotation. Back then Nerds were represented by Steve Urkel, Dexter in his Laboratory, Screetch from Saved by the Bell, and of course the annoying mouth breather standing over Helga's shoulder in Hey Arnold!

What use to be thick glasses, thin build, squeaky voice, and the outside of society; is now much less of a negative stereotype. In a world where Game of Thrones changed The World, Cosplaying is cool, Video Game and Comic Book movies are king, and EVERYONE wants to go to San Diego ComiCon, we Nerds feel safer than ever. What use to be uber nerd is now hipster chic. For many, now Nerd is a badge of pride. We now live in a world where Nerds outnumber all.

Nerdom in the 90's and still today tends to be associated with Sci-Fi, Video Games, Comics, and Fantasy. Though we are fans of those things, I truly feel that the term Nerd has more to do with WHAT you love than HOW you love. You don't have to be into computers and video games to be a Nerd anymore. Now a days, all it takes is to love something with such a passion that you can't be "cool" about it. No matter if it's a Theatre Nerd, A Comic Book Nerd, A History Nerd, A Video Game Nerd, or what have you; NERDS are everywhere now and we are taking over.

For instance, the top 5 highest grossing films at the worldwide box office are as follows: Avengers: Endgame, Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War…..How many of those come from the world of Nerd? And if you were to continue going through just the top 20, 11 of the next 15 are from the Nerd world, but I digress. It's just nice to know that The Mac when he was a shy little nerd in the 90's….would one day be part of the masses….it truly is Revenge of the Nerds.

But enough of today's statistics let's Nerd out about the 90's brother.
