The Story of 30&Nerdy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Davis and Tyler McDaniel, as their team shares their story with us below:

(KNOXVILLEVOYAGER.COM)

It didn’t just begin with an idea. It all began back in the Fall of 2007 when Tyler and Josh met in college. They began doing theatre, and choir and even had an Intro to Film class together. Throughout the years they became best friends.

They would always be heard talking about things like wrestling, theatre, comic books, movies, and other aspects of nerd culture. This went on for over a decade. They became each other’s right hand.

No matter if it was a quick intermission conversation of news from the world of Pop Culture or a 3-hour drive to a WWE Pay Per View; they were always talking about what was going on in the vast world of Nerd Culture.

They have been to each other’s wedding parties, traveled the country to see wrestling pay-per-views, and stayed up late for midnight movie premieres. They have picked each other up after bad times, and they have laughed with each other during good times.

After all that, one day, Josh came to Tyler with an idea to start a YouTube-based nerd show comparable to Good Mythical Morning. After talking and planning, and planning and talking… 30 & Nerdy Podcast was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

It hasn’t always been a smooth road. They have creative differences that they try to work through. Anytime people tackle a project together, whether they be friends, acquaintances, partners, or coworkers; individual passions and pride can get in the way.

You have to find a balance. There have been segments that they haven’t agreed on. There have been episodes they haven’t been on the same page about. They have had communication issues sometimes. There have even been times when one of them has either had to pull back or step away for a while and come back with a better attitude.

For instance, the biggest trial lately has been scheduling. They alternate, a lot of the time, on who is busiest in the world outside of podcasting. Tyler does a lot of theatres, as well as, working at Tennessee Legend Distillery. Josh works as a theatre teacher and has a wife and child.

So scheduling has been an obstacle lately, but like all obstacles; you make it work.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Starting a podcast in 2019 was always going to be difficult. We live in a time where saying, “I have a podcast,” is like saying, I’m in a band,” in the late ’90s. With over half a million podcasts in existence and us being in a small town in Tennessee, we knew it would be more for us than anyone.

We never thought that we’d be doing things like having over 11,000 downloads, meeting people from all over the country, interviewing professional cosplayers and authors, interviewing directors and crew members of movies, or having listeners all over the globe. So one thing that I would say that we are proud of is that we just celebrated 3 years back in May.

We are in our 4th Season. Our 150th episode is right around the corner. These are feats that a very small percentage of podcasters get to talk about. I am very proud, that through a lot of what has come in a very short time, we are still going.” (Direct quote from Tyler)

They have also been proud of some smaller things that make their show different. For instance, one thing they do is a Nerdcabulary Word in most episodes, where they create new words and definitions by either combining Nerd with an existing word or by describing words that Nerds use in daily conversations.

They also have been proud of a lot of the original things they have been fortunate to have. They have an original theme song by an amazing guitarist named Kyle Standifer, original art design by David Nunez, original attire by Advertising Expressions, and even a new Credits theme on the way by YouTube sensation Beth Crowley.

They were even able to do a live show in Market Square; right down the road from Neyland Stadium, which is huge to them. So they have a lot to be proud of.

What matters most to you?

What matters to them isn’t the recognition. For instance, if asked about his 30&Nerdy shirt or hat in public; Tyler usually says that it is a podcast he listens to, or if he is at work; it is a podcast that Tennessee Legend Distillery sponsors, which isn’t a lie.

The main focus of 30&Nerdy Podcast has always been to Educate, Enlightened, and Entertain on all things Nerd Culture. So for them, if just one person learns something new from an episode; that matters. If someone smiles on a bad day cause of something they said; that matters.

If someone somewhere is just a little happier or learns something new because of the 30&Nerdy Podcast; then they are happy.

“I’m proud that we just went for it and have fun with what we do. When thinking of favorites, It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I loved the March Nerdness Tournament, Princess Bride, Nerdin in the 90s, and a ton of others.” Direct quote from Josh
